Employer-Based Health Bill Faces Ballot Challenges. On October 5, 2003 Governor Davis signed SB 2 (Burton) to extend coverage to one million uninsured workers. SB 60′s repeal was one of Governor Schwarzenegger’s first acts. Culminating a five-year battle by immigrants’ rights, labor, faith-based and community groups to restore access to driver’s licenses for all California residents, Governor Davis signed SB 60 (Cedillo) on Friday, September 5, 2003. Effective January 1, 2004, all California residents, regardless of immigration status, would have been eligible to obtain a driver’s license, provided that they pass the driving and written tests, submit specific documents establishing their identity, and comply with all other licensing requirements. Fearing that a threatened ballot initiative to repeal the act would make it impossible to restore, the Legislature voted to repeal SB 60.

How would you put together a health care system? In Spring 2003, JERICHO led workshops around the state on the crisis in health care. Participants were then invited to fill out surveys asking what they would like to see in health care reform. Universal coverage was the top choice. Health Care Reform WorkshopsAvailable by Request
Eight workshops on health care reform have been conducted around the state this past spring. The workshops are now available for groups to request in their area.

The workshop outlines the current problems for the 6.5 million people in California who are uninsured and highlights other aspects of a system that is coming under more and more scrutiny. It explores the underlying values that should guide a delivery system; involves participants in reflecting on the current reform options in light of faith-based values, and presents ways to actively engage in the renewed and growing movement towards health care reform.

If you know of a group that would like to sponsor a workshop in your area, call or email the JERICHO office.
